No-Dig Gardening Is So Easy

I’m all about making gardening easier and I’m hearing from more and more very experienced gardeners that no-dig gardening is really the way to go. I’ve been doing this for years as a means to cut costs and reestablish nutrients in my garden. The result, my soil has gotten healthier which means that my plants are healthy.

How does it work? Well, in the fall start with leaving your leaves in the garden to protect your plants and decompose in place. This is a much more environmentally friendly way to go. I’ll bet you can imagine a few reasons why… For example, better nutrition for the plants, no trucks hauling away the leaves, immediate compost to retain moisture in the soil, homes for beneficial insects through the winter, places for small animals to hide, and more…. You get the idea.

In the spring, if you are concerned about mold you can gently rake the leaves out of the garden to dry things out a bit. You can run your lawnmower over the (with bag firmly attached) to chop them up, then replace them in the garden. Your plants will be ever so happy.

And, did you know that digging the soil actually releases carbon dioxide? A little less digging means a little less C02. That’s good too. But, you can dig where you like, but don’t feel any pressure to go crazy.

No Dig Gardening may even help you love gardening even more. My garden has become very established over the years and requires very little work. Hopefully this method helps you love gardening even more!
