Pretty Simple Gardens
Winter Downtime
Time To Catch Up
In the winter, I love to read about gardening, listen to podcasts, and dream about warm weather and digging in my garden.
Composting Kitchen Scraps
During the winter I don't trudge through the snow to the compost bin every time I have scraps. If the path hasn't been shoveled I have been known to put kitchen scraps discretely under bushes in my gardens. This also goes for banana peels, veggie and fruit scraps. I'm not worried about animals because most are hibernating and I don't have bears in my suburban neighborhood - usually... A few small animals might nibble. The scraps get frozen quickly. Once things are warmer I'll get out a good rake and turn them into the garden. Essentially, they are composting "on site" and to date I haven't had any issues.
I will say, that if I lived in a wilder area then tossing scraps under bushes is likely not the best plan. I do think I need a neighbor with chickens. I'm sure they will love the scraps.
